Supermum?

Returning to work after having a baby seems to be a hot topic at the moment. First of all, it was disclosed that there are EU plans which set to ban women from returning to work within six weeks of giving birth and give them full pay for longer. Then, giving a somewhat contradictory message, the now ex-French Justice Minister Rachida Dati returned...

Action is ALL

Quoting Tom Peters: "I have learned only three things in forty years. One, he or she who has the best relationships takes home the price. Two, all effective leaders are full-time sales people. And three, he or she who tries the most stuff wins; action beats talk ten times out of ten." This fits very well in with the success stories we ha...

Heartland Payment Systems' Obama moment

Heartland Payment Systems first began receiving fraudulent activity reports from the card schemes late last year indicating a possible breach in its defences. The company called the Secret Service and breach forensics teams to investigate and eventually traced the source of the leak to a piece of installed malware last week. So why wait until late...

Breaking up the Banks

Each day we hear of another bank deep in a hole of its own making. The billions and eventually trillions of tax payer's money pitched into banks is taking some time to take effect and get the business moving again. Today it's unclear how much is enough and what the long term ramifications will be. The UK and USA governments are the main protagonis...

The joy of transaction-based recurring revenue

Intelligent Environments appears to have lived up to the first part of its name with the revenue model it has in place with a growing number of customers. Not only does it take a small one-off fee each time a consumer submits an application online for one of its customers' card or bank account products, but the company also takes an annual fee for ...

Improved on Finextra - the search engine

One of my colleagues here pointed out that our search engine on the site wasn't bringing back the right results if you typed in web 2.0. I thought it was just displaying good taste - the phrase web 2.0 still makes me shudder. Anyway - it is fixed and overhauled. Try it out - the search box is on most of our pages on the top right.

Speeding up Windows - two tricks to try

We've already pondered why Windows slows down over time and had some handy tips from the community, so I thought I'd share some more of mine as I started to do last year. I'll assume your machine is patched and not compromised for starters! I spent two years trying to get a stable audio production platform running on XP - with limited success - b...

Bank Loan Insurance Must End

If you go back less than a working generation, a bank would lend money and then manage that loan through to complete repayment. If it had done its assessment properly, and if the customer was fortunate enough to not suffer any financial misfortune, at the end of the loan period it would have been satisfactorily repaid and both parties would have ...

A Poster Child for 419 victims

This Canadian news story has provided a human face - that of a John Rempel - for the people who fall prey to 419 phishing scams. Sadly his unbelievable gullibility (or is that stupidity) doesn't generate too much sympathy from the caring, sharing citizens of the interweb. But my reason for posting a link to this story (and I know 419 scams aren't ...
