Tap-n-PIN mystery

23 February 2017  |  4315 views  |  3

Calling payment industry experts for help, as I am at a loss here.

Overseas cardholders from several countries can do “tap & PIN” in the UK to make payment transactions above the contactless floor limit.

I can do “tap & PIN” in some EU countries with my UK-issued contactless bank card to make a payment above the contactless floor limit.

But I cannot do “tap & PIN” with my card in the UK.

What is happening there?.. Who is calling the shots: issuer, card network, POS OEM or Donald Trump?

Please tell me it the latter! :)

The UK does not support online PIN at POS; therefore, it should not be possible to 'tap & PIN' in the UK, irrespective of where your card was issued.  Do you have examples of where this is possible?

OTOH, it may be possible to use a UK card to 'tap & PIN' outside the UK, in markets which do support online PIN at POS (US, Australia, NL, etc.)  This will depend on whether the card supports online PIN as a contactless CVM.

Alex, thank you for the feedback. There are several places where "tap & PIN" works in the UK, e.g. Shell petrol station in Loughborough.

Hi Alex & Alex,

The issue and uncertainty comes from the terminal settings.

The terminals all support this but the Merchant and Acquier need to agree to its use.

I hope that helps explain the uncertainty and inconsitencies you are seeing.

UK Cards agreement and guidance is needed to get this functionality to be everywhere.

PS getting back into payments after some time away - setting u a small bank.

Talk soon
