Internet banking customers now represent 50 per cent of all First Direct accounts, says the bank.

First Direct has also signed 100,000 customers to its text messaging service, which informs customers of their balance, tells them if their salary has credited their account, or even if they are about to go overdrawn.

A recent First Direct survey confirmed an uptake in mobile use, with over a quarter (27%) of Britons claiming to use their phones more now than they did 12 months ago.

Alan Hughes, chief executive at First Direct, comments: "Combining our award winning person-to-person telephone service with the capability to bank electronically was always going to be a winning combination."
