Monzo lets customers tap to activate debit cards

15 November 2017  |  10083 views  |  0 hipster suit with phone

UK digital challenger bank Monzo has found another little way to make life simpler for customers, letting them activate their new debit cards by tapping the plastic against their NFC-enabled Android phones.

The feature means new customers will not have to enter the card number, or even take a picture of it, to activate their card.

In a blog, Monzo says that when a user taps a new card against their handset, it reads the NFC tag and checks whether it has the expected data, extracting the PAN number and sending it to the bank's backend servers.

The feature is only available on Android because Google, unlike Apple, lets third party developers access its NFC function.
