Is equally shared parenting the way forward in order to address gender equality? This article in the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/feb/19/parenting-shared-responsibility-viv-groskop) is an interesting one, detailing how an American couple split their working week equally and divide household duties down the middle to relieve the women of a ‘second shift’ and to give the men more involvement in the family life.
It’s certainly a good idea in theory as it means men taking more responsibility for child care, enabling women to return to work. However as author Viv Groskop found out, it’s not as easy as it may seem, and flexible working would have to be far more widespread and accepted for it to work. There are certainly a wide range of views expressed in response to the article, see what you think.
