Surveillance capitalism...

I have just started to read Shoshana Zuboff´s much-praised The Age of Surveillance Capitalism. Being a founding member of the Real Time Economy program and MyData.org it will be interesting to learn how she sees the future and how much I will have to lean on my belief that GDPR-like legislation becoming global is the answer to the problems in her opening statement.

I have to confess that I belong to the perhaps naive group that has not been overly concerned with privacy even before GPDR entered the scene. And by putting the individual in firm control of MyData we can - in my opinion - both improve privacy aspects and above all make the combination of MyData and anonymized Big Data serve the individual's life situations better than ever before.

Her point that Google & Co can make money out of using anonymised data from the masses is of course very true. But if that reduces the need for expensive media advertising (the consumer pays every cent of it) and bring up new alternatives it is not only bad.

This is my starting point. Let us see how much I have to revise my thinking.

My first impression is that she is taking a very firm political stance - not much discussing pros and cons. Neoliberalism is the dirty crook..

Of course she is right in saying that "industrial capitalism dangerously disrupted nature" but socialism would have been much worse and it should be said that both owners and managers now have made green U-turn in many if not yet most places.

So far no mention of GDPR - and how enterprises are supporting it also for the US. So their is their is some hope that surveillance capitalism may actually be useful..

I will try to keep an open mind...

Have not progressed very far - but feel a little worried about her very angry cons-only approach. In one page only expressions like "a new breed of menace", "plundered for behavioral data", "all for the sake of other's gain", "perverse amalgam of empowerment", poignant harms"  and so it goes....
