Community
Yesterday's letter sent to the Telegraph signed by 100 of the country’s leading business figures demonstrates a real belief in the current Government’s ability to manage the economy successfully and create a strong business community. It also demonstrates, five weeks before an election, a degree of concern that despite the shambles left by Blair, Brown and Balls the spectre of a weak and poorly lead Labour Party winning the election is a possibility. These eminent 100 are clearly appealing to the business community not to act like turkeys voting for Christmas.
But what does this mean for UK small businesses? A robust economy is good for everyone. But more attention needs to be spent on the truly 'Small Business' community. These businesses run into the millions in number but in truth are not represented within the various initiatives being run for the so called 'SME sector’. Why? Because these Small Businesses are not part of the SME sector. They are micro businesses with a turnover of less than £2m PA. They represent the shopkeepers, hair dressers, publicans, restaurant owners, MOT garage owners. In fact, all the businesses we use in our local community day in and day out. They are always neglected by Governments, regardless of who, because individually they are not considered vote winning.
Ultimately, it is time for the current Government to win the Election, continue with its successful economic policy and appoint someone from the private sector to champion the micro business sector and the huge number of votes it represents.
