The service is being offered throughout December by NatWest P2P payment subsidiary FastPay.

The sender simply requires the email address or mobile phone number of the person they are sending money to.

Over the Christmas period, FastPay users can send their money anytime during December and it will be delivered, electronically gift wrapped, on Christmas Eve, by either text message or email. Recipients do not need to be registered to receive payments and FastPay customers do not need to bank with NatWest.

Jeremy Rudge, head of NatWest e-commerce, says: "Giving money at Christmas is sometimes regarded as impersonal, but FastPay Cash can be electronically gift wrapped and received on Christmas Eve."
