SunGard fends off Justice Department inquiry into Comdisco sale

SunGard has completed its $850 million purchase of Comdisco's Availability Solutions business following a US Circuit Court of Appeals ruling which overturned the US Department of Justice's bid to delay the acquisition.

Included in the transaction are Comdisco's US based Availability Solutions unit, as well as its professional services organisation, Web-hosting business and related operations in the United Kingdom and France.

SunGard beat off rival bids from Hewlett-Packard to win Comdisco's disaster recovery business, but then found the sale held up by a Justice Department inquiry into the competitive implications of the deal.

James Mann, chairman and chief executive officer of SunGard, says: "Customers will benefit from a greater geographic presence with more facilities, platforms, network capacity and technical personnel, with increased operating efficiencies."
