Citi taps JPMorgan's Gavin Michael to lead consumer bank tech ops

Citi has hired senior JPMorgan Chase executive Gavin Michael to lead technology operations at its consumer bank.

Reporting to global consumer bank (GCB) chief executive Stephen Bird, Michael will join Citi in November, replacing Mark Torkos, who retired in July.

The 4000 person-strong GCB technology team supports the digitisation efforts of all the consumer businesses - cards, retail banking and mortgage, commercial banking and Citi FinTech.

In a memo on the appointment, Bird says Michael will "lead the long-term strategic direction, planning and management of our global technology organisation, execute our cloud architecture, data and services strategies and drive digitisation efforts to accelerate speed to market".

The new man has spent the last three years as head of digital for consumer and community banking at Chase. Before that he was chief technology innovation officer at Accenture and had a stint at Lloyds.

Last week Citi lost head of fintech, Heather Cox, to USAA. Her role at the unit will be taken on by COO Yolande Piazza until a successor is found.
