The app enables customers to check their balance from their preferred Scotiabank account with a simple swipe of the screen on the Samsung wearable devices.

Jeff Marshall, vice president, self-service customer experience, says the release is a Canadian first for wearable banking in the financial services sector.

"We have seen a definite shift in the way consumers are interacting with our products and services," he says. "It is our goal to stay ahead of the curve by developing self-service banking solutions for Canadians before they know they need them - and ultimately a richer banking experience for our customers."

Innovation for innovation sake is really something that is becoming quite apparent in fintech. This though does feel a little thought out. Checking my balance quickly and easily just as I am about to get in line to make a purchase makes sense. However, if I was paying with my mobile device already, you would think that the mobile would already provide me with this kind of information...You would hope should I say...

With that in mind, does this really have a long term real world application?
