Under the agreement, BT Ignite is providing Barclays with a tailored PKI to establish a secure method of electronically exchanging information with its customers and within its own business. In addition, Barclays will use this technology to develop services for its business customers that will allow them to transact and communicate securely when dealing with their own suppliers and clients.

David Weymouth, group chief information officer at Barclays, says BT Ignite has the flexibility to meet different application needs right across the group. "We expect to be able to leverage BT Ignite's in-depth understanding of PKI and their excellent operational capabilities as we continue to e-enable the bank," he adds.

Based on the OnSite platform from VeriSign, the BT Ignite Custom PKI service enables large organisations to set up their own multiple digital certification programmes through a managed service.
