HSBC says the service will be manned by its 2000 student advisers who have been specifically trained to advise on student finances.

Rebecca Stephenson, head of personal customer marketing at HSBC, comments: "More students than ever are banking online and our research also tells us that the internet is now their preferred choice for sourcing information."

The Web site is divided into sections which feature information on scholarships, grants and student loans; a money guide with advice on budgeting; and tips on finding the best travel and transport deals.

Stephenson says although the Web site covers finances, there is also information on other topics such as studying and renting property.

HSBC has partnered Yahoo! in other financial services ventures, including the PayDirect person-to-person payment service.
