The FBI (National White Collar Crime Center - Internet Crime Complaint Center) released their latest 'Internet Crime Report' for 2007. See http://www.ic3.gov/media/annualreport/2007_IC3Report.pdf
The report actually claims a reduction in the number of Internet crimes reported to the ICCC in 2007 when compared to 2006. Does this mean Internet crime is fading out and doesn't pay any more? No way! The total yearly dollar loss went up from $ 198 M in 2006 to $ 239 M in 2007.
There are many other pieces of information to browse through in the report.
My take from this report is that Internet users are getting used to fraud and in fact the regular users simply ignore (and delete) the usual muck entering their inbox. I think the world is becoming de-sensitized to fraudulent attempts. I regularly get emails informing me of fortunes awaiting me in Iraq, UK, China, Leichenstein ... all over ; and no more just Nigeria or Zimbabwe. I don't even give them a second glance and just delete them.
So, I guess internet criminals have to move up the value chain. Some of them already have - attacking social networks and indulging in 'friendly fraud'.
A sign of maturing times!
