Westpac customers had millions of dollars incorrectly removed from their accounts during the weekend because of a computer glitch, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Thousands of customers are understood to have been affected by the fault, which deducted regular bill payments - such as mortgage and utility bills - twice from online accounts.
A Westpac spokeswoman told the newspaper that the error has been rectified although the exact cause of the problem has yet to be identified. The bank has re-credited affected accounts and offered temporary overdrafts or increases in credit card limits to customers who were financially stretched by the incident.
