Under the agreement, IMS will replace the seperate mainframe systems currently used by Shinkin Banks' 350 member organisations - which are currently decentralised into seven regional centres - with one integrated Unix system.

It is anticipated the project will cut costs and centralise and streamline the banks' computer operations, eventually processing in excess of 45 million transactions each day, says the company.

Other Newton customers include JeonBuk Bank, the Central Post Office Bank and the Mutual Savings Association of Korea.
