Barclays recruits Goldman computer scientist as head of markets innovation

Barclays has hired Justin Brickwood, formerly head of electronic trading engineering at Goldman Sachs, to fulfill a new role as head of markets innovation, promoting the adoption of advanced AI and machine learning techniques within the bank's trading business.

With advancements in technology rapidly disrupting the status quo in wholesale sales and trading markets, Barclay's chief Jes Staley has committed to a concerted focus on digitisation of the the Bank's Markets business.

The arrival of Brickwood, a 20-year veteran of Goldman Sachs' trading unit and an expert in the design of algorithmic execution strategies, is the latest in a slew of appointments intended to drive Barclays' business forward.

In his new role, Brickwood will report to John Stecher, chief innovation officer for Barclays and work closely with Nas Al-Khudairi, who oversees the Markets electronic trading platform and was himself recruited from Credit Suisse earlier this year. He will also be re-united with Asita Anche, who joined Barclays from Goldman in 2017 as head of quantitative electronic trading and data science.

Says Al-Khudairi: “Justin’s extensive experience and expertise will be instrumental as we evolve the Markets business for future success and develop Barclays’ electronic capabilities to significantly enhance our client offering.”
