Barclays Global Investors moves to IP-based network

Barclays Global Investors is to use technology from Avaya to enable its corporate network to support Internet Protocol-based communications.

The move is part of a strategy by Barclays to operate its voice and data systems across one global network. Under the agreement, BGI is upgrading its Avaya Definity communication servers to the latest Definity R9.5 software with IP Solutions and installing new Avaya IP telephones.

The IP Solutions software turns the Definity server into an IP communication server that supports voice and data, multi-media messaging, telecommuting and remote offices, call centre and customer relationship management (CRM) functions and multiple connectivity options.

"We're standardising on Avaya's IP telephony systems to save money and simplify our network administration," explains Patricia Green, BGI's corporate telecommunications manager.

In addition to an IP-enabled corporate network, the BGI strategy includes the provision of IP telephony service for mobile and remote workers, and the implementation of a 'follow the sun' trading strategy.
