The Share Shops, located in Colchester, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Darlington, Kingston, Leeds and Liverpool, offer an opportunity for individuals who wish to find out more about investing in the stock market. Anyone can stop by for an informal discussion with their Share Shop specialist, or register for Barclays Stockbrokers services, during normal branch business hours.

Not only will Share Shop specialists be able to give details of all Barclays Stockbrokers products and services, but also have the facilities to demonstrate Barclays Stockbrokers online dealing system, both through PC and WAP mobile phones. If customers wish to deal during a visit to a Share Shop, staff will be able to put them in touch with Barclays dealers in Glasgow.

The Share Shop initiative was originally piloted in Barclays Colchester branch and the scheme is now being rolled out across the UK in selected Barclays high street branches across the country where demand has been identified.

The inspiration for the Share Shops came from the US where brokers who found themselves competing on price alone, decided to use shops to distinguish themselves from their competitors. Many members of the public prefer their stockbroker to have a 'physical' presence and like to be able to talk face to face with a member of staff.

Cris Edwards, marketing manager at Barclays Stockbrokers, says: "Customer reaction has been terrific. I am delighted with the level of interest shown. The adage that ‘people like to deal with people’ holds true. To be available on demand at high street branches is now what our competitors should be considering."

Barclays Stockbrokers is scheduled to open Share Shops in Woolwich branches at Croydon and Bromley, and in Barclays Bromley during September.
