Barrese, who first joined PayPal's former parent eBay as an architect back in 2001, is stepping down to "take time off," says a statement. He will stay on to ensure a smooth transition to Sri Shivananda, who will become SVP and CTO on 1 April.

As CTO Shivananda, who has been at PayPal and eBay for nearly 15 years, will oversee the company’s platform and infrastructure with a focus on availability, scalability, performance and information security.

However, PayPal's payments and identity teams, which had been ruled by Barrese, will move to the product and engineering organisation run by ex-Braintree boss William Ready.

Says Barrese: "We have an extremely deep bench of expertise on our technology team, and I’m confident Sri is well prepared and positioned to ensure PayPal’s technology platform remains at the leading edge as PayPal continues to define the future of digital payments."
