European authorities say they have shut down an ATM 'jackpotting' gang that used malware to empty cash machines across the continent.
Working with Europol, local authorities descended on houses in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, arresting eight alleged gang members.
The group is accused of using the Tyupkin malware to jackpot ATMs, physically installing the virus on machines and then emptying their cash cassettes via direct manipulation, using the PIN pads to submit commands to the Trojan.
In 2014 security firm Kaspersky warned that Tyupkin had been used to steal millions of dollars from ATMs at banks in Eastern Europe.
Wil van Gemert, deputy director, operations, Europol, says: "Over the last few years we have seen a major increase in ATM attacks using malicious software. The sophisticated cybercrime aspect of these cases illustrates how offenders are constantly identifying new ways to evolve their methodologies to commit crimes."
