Throughout August, over 14,000 HSBC customers who have subscribed to the bank’s BT Cellnet mobile phone package will be sent a text message inviting them to register for the new, free service.

The text-based service will offer customers balances and mini-statements plus daily alerts when their balance falls below a user-specified figure.

"Our job is to harness new technology to help people keep on top of their money," says Mike Constantine, head of electronic services at HSBC Bank. “Our new text messaging service does exactly that: it delivers relevant and useful information which customers can receive when they want it."

Customers can choose to receive up to five messages on three of their UK mainland current, savings and credit card accounts. The messages are sent between 8am and 12 noon every day.
