Barclays extends cheque imaging to Android phones and iPads

Barclays is to roll out its mobile cheque imaging service to Android phones and iPad users, bringing the service within reach of one million more customers.

Since the launch of cheque imaging a year ago, nearly three quarters of a million pounds have been deposited by the 30,000 Barclays iPhone users who have subscribed to the service.

Available through the Barclays Mobile Banking app, users can pay in cheques of up to £500 and get real-time access to the funds by snapping a picture on their mobile and uploading the deposit to their accounts. Cheque deposits by mobile are cleared within two working days, as opposed to the standard six day process.

Barclays Personal and Corporate Banking Chief Executive, Ashok Vaswani, says: "Extending to android phones is an important step forward in giving all customers the ability to pay in cheques using their mobile devices.”

I was offered to take part in the Barclays cheque imaging and it would be great if I could use it for various cheques I receive, but it only works for Barclays cheques so until it works for cheques from any bank I don't think it will be very useful for most users. But big credit to Barclays for developing technology to ease the use of an outdated payment form.

"nearly three quarters of a million pounds" in 1 year - that's, like, peanut molecules! I wonder if this or the 30K figure is right because this works out to GBP 25 per cheque, which seems very low.

July 2016 sees the future clearing model which will enable cheque imaging possibilities for cheques from any UK bank to any other UK bank.  After 10 years use in the US almost 1 in 5 cheques are deposited via image.
