Canadian m-payments group embed NFC tag in magazine ad

Canadian bank CIBC, telco Rogers and handset maker RIM are running a print magazine ad featuring embedded NFC in a bid to promote the technology and its use in their new mobile payments service.

In a Canadian first, picked up by Mobile Payments Today, the BlackBerry ad is running in Connected Rogers Magazine, a publication for the telco's subscribers. The ad includes an NFC tag developed by specialist firm Crosscliq which, when tapped with an enabled handset, delivers a holiday gift offer to the user.

From there customers scroll across three online offers that include free premium BlackBerry apps, information on the new BB10 line-up including options for updates and articles, and the option to download the CIBC Sure Tap app, which lets users make contactless payments.

Ian Barkley, CTO, Crosscliq, says: "This is another great example of how NFC continues to deliver innovative and effective advertising solutions especially for the magazine and print industry. NFC offers advertisers for the first time in history, the means to connect the offline print world with the online digital world."
