Gordon is leaving the bank he joined in 2004 from electronics retailer Best Buy and embarking on a "personal change in direction" says a statement given to Reuters.

He is being replaced by BofA veteran Readhead, who has been with the bank since 1991, and will now report to Cathy Bessant, head of global technology and operations.

In October she was named consumer market and distribution optimisation executive, reporting to co-chief operating officer David Darnell. In previous roles she looked after e-commerce, ATMs and call centres, as well as small-business banking.
