Home Depot to roll out PayPal in-store payments nationally

US retailer Home depot is to roll out Paypal's in-store payment system nationwide following a six-week trial at five pilot stores.

Paypal is hailing the national roll-out to all 2000 Home Depot locations as a vindication of its strategy for mobile payments on the high street.

PayPal has eschewed the use of NFC technology at the till, maintaining that the tech is years away from attaining mainstream critical mass.

At Home Depot, customers can either swipe a PayPal-issued card to pay for in-store purchases, or enter a mobile phone number and PIN into the point-of-sale terminal.

Don Kingsborough, VP of retail and pre-paid products, PayPal, says: "Within the next two weeks, every The Home Depot store in the US will be equipped to accept payments from customers using a PayPal card, or mobile phone number and PIN combination."

Paypal has not disclosed the volumes processed during the initial pilot run.
