Reeg, who has held the position on a temporary basis since January, succeeds W Roy Dunbar, who quit the card firm earlier this year.

Reeg, who has been with MasterCard for 13 years, became chief technology officer (CTO) in 2005 and was responsible for computer operations, network engineering, technology architecture, database management, programme management, information security and software testing and quality. He also led the company's core processing systems re-engineering project.

Prior to joining MasterCard Reeg held IT and management positions at Sprint, Cleveland Pneumatic, Totco and Conoco.

Based near St Louis, MasterCard GTO manages operations in 210 countries and territories, including major processing centres in Brussels, Sydney and Chennai.
