The SMS Balance solution is based on Fenestrae's Mobile Data Server (MDS) technology. Consumers must first register for the service in writing, detailing their account number and mobile phone number.

Subscribers can activate the service between 7am and 2am by sending a text message to the MDS server at the bank. The server recognises the mobile phone number without having to pick up the call and automatically relays account balance information back to the handset in SMS format.

Fenestrae says the Postbank service was implemented out-of-the-box within a month of the order.

The Fenestrae Mobile Data Server enables the mobile user to access horizontal applications such as e-mail and electronic calendar in the Microsoft Outlook environment, and vertical applications such as sales and customer databases using any GSM or WAP phone.
