EDB says the five-year contract will see the two companies work together to provide a unified card issuance platform covering debit and credit cards to retail and corporate markets across the bank's international branches.

Handelsbanken's Norwegian and Estonian operations have been slated as the first locations to migrate to the new framework.

The provider says its Web-based services include card administration, user support, operating systems and settlement and reconciliation through international card networks. The technology can be adapted to each country's national infrastructure.

Gunnel Silvén, manager business development card services, Handelsbanken, says: "It is increasingly important for an international bank to be able to offer our branches and their customers good card solutions that easily could be adapted to different national needs, and also permit standardisation of the bank's common card solutions."
