To use the service, customers text CHQ or PIB followed by their sort code and account number to 82332. The message will cost no more than the usual charge for sending a text, says the bank, and customers should receive the new books within four working days of placing the order.

Matthew Timms, Internet and ATM director Lloyds TSB, says: "With time at a premium we are sure that this new service will prove popular, helping customers to keep on top of those small tasks like ordering a cheque book which can easily fall by the wayside on a busy day."

Lloyds TSB has been offering customers a weekly text-based current account mini statement since December last year.
