According to press reports, WorldPay's payment and administration network has been swamped with computer-generated requests since Saturday. It is not known when service will be restored, but the company claims it is still able to process transactions and that data security has not been compromised.

WorldPay, which provides online payment adminstration services to 27,000 clients, suffered a similar online attack in November last year.

Last month US payments firm Authorize.net also struggled to stay online after it was repeatedly hit by distributed denial of service attacks.
