MarketStream utilises the Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and third generation networks to stream market data to any Java enabled mobile device on any network.

Aether says the system uses available bandwidth more efficiently than most wireless browser-based applications.

Commenting on the new product, Morten Nielsen, managing director, Aether Systems, says: "Basically it's a desktop terminal without the desk. It is the only feature-rich, streaming wireless solution for the financial markets available as a standalone product, so users are not tied to any specific market data vendor or network."

The system also includes an alerting function which allows users to set limit alerts. Intraday charts and detailed data for an individual stock index or instrument are also displayed. Users can also access news from Dow Jones Newswires.

Separately, California-based eSignal, a division of Interactive Data Corporation, has re-launched its QuoTrek service which delivers streaming quote and market information over PDAs.

QuoTrek delivers US and international stocks, indices, futures, options and FX data from 75 exchanges to devices that utilise Microsoft Pocket PC, Palm and RIM BlackBerry operating systems.

ESignal's original QuoTrek service, launched in 1983, was a handheld, wireless device that delivered real-time market data.
