Under the deal, Gemplus will design a microprocessor native Dynamic Data Authentication (DDA) card, which will enable JCB to offer customers multi-application EMV smart cards.

Card personalisation services will be provided by Toppan Printing - Gemplus' local partner.

Masahiro Omoto, executive vice president and general manager, advanced technologies, JCB, says Gemplus will provide a platform that will enable customers to adopt specialised applications that will be offered in the future.

Separately, Gemplus has won a contract with Latin America's largest bank, Banco do Brasil for the supply of 400,000 Java-based MasterCards.

The bank will be the first to roll out EMV smart cards based on Java card technology in the region.
