Cash handling company Nokas has entered into an agreement with Danske Bank to purchase ATMs that are not placed in the bank’s advisory centres.
The agreement covers 177 of Danske Bank’s current ATMs in Denmark.
Danske Bank continues to own and operate about 200 ATMs that are located primarily in its advisory centres across Denmark. The sales amount is not disclosed.
Owning more than 1,500 ATMs in Norway, Sweden and Finland, Nokas is the largest owner of ATMs in the Nordic region, and the company currently operates and maintains Danske Bank’s ATMs. In Denmark, Nokas operates more than 100 night safes and the ATM chain KONTANTEN, which consists of about 300 ATMs located across the country. The company is a leading supplier of cash handling and logistics solutions and also renders cash handling services to a wide range of other banks as well as night safe and ATM services.
The transfer of ATMs from Danske Bank to Nokas will take place throughout 2024. A pilot test is conducted for a small number of ATMs, and the experience gained will be used to ensure as smooth a transition as possible regarding the transfer of the remaining ATMs.
The ATMs will be accessible to all consumers, but in the first two years from the transfer of the first ATM to Nokas, Danske Bank customers will enjoy the same prize for cash withdrawals in Danish kroner as they do today when they use a Danske Bank ATM.
“We work every day to become the best possible bank for our customers. By reducing our operational activities, which we do here by selling some of our ATMs, we will free up time and resources to develop our core banking activities within advisory services, digital solutions and products,” says Mark Wraa-Hansen, Head of Personal Customers in Denmark, and continues:
“We are therefore very pleased with the agreement with Nokas which - in addition to its strong cash handling capabilities - has extensive expertise with owning and operating ATMs. In addition, the agreement ensures that ATMs are widely accessible to our customers.”
The remaining about 200 Danske Bank ATMs that are located primarily in the bank's advisory centres are not currently part of the agreement.
Morten Kierkegaard, Nokas’s Country Manager in Denmark, says:
“Our core task is to handle cash. We are therefore pleased that Danske Bank has decided to sell ATMs to Nokas. This is a strategic development of Nokas's existing business. At the same time, it aligns with our efforts to ensure the availability of cash in the future, as cash is a competitive supplement to digital payment solutions and helps citizens who find it difficult to use digital solutions.”
