The new release leverages open development standards, further improves its patented continuous availability architecture, and better supports lightweight deployments in addition to multi-site, high-transaction environments.

A major highlight of the Sonic ESB 8.0 product release is its support for a RESTful (Representation State Transfer) architectural approach to integration. RESTful Web Services simplify integration with portals, mash-ups, mobile devices, and any web-based application and have become an important architectural direction for many companies supporting lightweight deployments.

Tom Maguire, Office of the Chief Technology Officer, EMC, said: "The Progress Sonic ESB product is an integral part of our messaging infrastructure, and we welcome the improvements the Progress team has made with the Sonic 8.0 release. Support for open standards and the addition of RESTful Web Services brings with it a new level of code portability and time-to-business for our development teams. The Sonic 8.0 release is ideal for the types of large-scale deployments we are rolling out and will be a core part of our infrastructure moving forward."

In addition to RESTful Web Services, Sonic 8.0 has an increased focus on open, standards-based programming models including enhanced performance and simplified development for traditional Web Services and the promotion of Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs) as the default programming model. Sonic ESB 8.0 also leverages open technologies to support lightweight integration patterns with broker-less deployments. This open development model not only enables customers to avoid vendor lock-in, but gives them access to a wide development pool, minimizing the requirement for training, and improving developer productivity.

The patented Continuous Availability Architecture within the Sonic ESB platform is enhanced in the Sonic 8.0 release and delivers zero-downtime upgrades and patches to highly-distributed, environmenvironments from a centralized location. This last-mile enhancement delivers the industry's highest level of fault tolerance and continuous availability, eliminating the need for planned downtime in even the most complex distributed environments - crucial in 24/7 scenarios. The ability to install and manage distributed, live environments from a centralized location reduces costs, shortens the time in test/QA phase, and reduces the chances of location-based discrepancies. This is the industry's only true, 100 percent uptime messaging infrastructure.

Hub Vandervoort, chief technology officer (enterprise infrastructure), Progress Software, said: "The Sonic 8.0 products give users a ‘best of both worlds' scenario, offering the benefits of open source development along with the rich tooling that has enabled Sonic to become a market leader. The availability of the Sonic 8.0 release advances the state-of-the-art in SOA and enterprise integration by combining the power and flexibility of an open model with the unmatched multi-site operations management and deployment capabilities. This is all backed, as always, by Progress' industry-leading Continuous Availability Architecture, making it the most effective and reliable messaging infrastructure available."
