Oberthur Technologies, one of the world's leading smart card vendors, announces the successful completion of CUP (China Union Pay) certification for its Shenzhen manufacturing center in China.

The Oberthur Technologies Shenzhen manufacturing site is already providing several hundred million SIM cards globally for the Telecom industry, and is now supplying magnetic stripe and EMV cards to banking customers in China and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. EMV is the global electronic transaction standard that outlines interaction between chip (smart) cards and merchant terminals to ensure worldwide inter-operability.

Already certified by Visa, MasterCard and Amex as a response to the steady growth of the EMV market in Asia, the Oberthur Technologies Shenzhen production unit is increasing the scope of its operations with this successful certification payment scheme standard.

The completion of CUP certification makes Oberthur Technologies the first major smart card vendor in China to be certified for all 4 schemes for magnetic stripe, contact and dual interface cards.

The benefit of this CUP certification is a major step for Oberthur Technologies in its objective to operate closer to its customers and strengthen its position in this key part of the world.

"The Shenzhen manufacturing site was recently extended to provide state of the art capabilities to address the Asia Pacific banking market and offer a higher level of services to our customers. This certification is an important milestone to strengthen our offer in the region," commented Xavier Drilhon, Managing Director, Card Systems Division of Oberthur Technologies.
