Charges for buying and selling shares online start at just £9.99 for transactions valued at under £1000, and £12.50 for deals over £1000. Abbey says the fees are among the cheapest on the high street, where broker charges typically run to £40 for shares over the value of £5,000.

Investors using the service to buy or sell shares online are given the latest 'live' price and can immediately execute the trade during market hours, says Pak Chan, head of investments marketing at Abbey National.

He adds: "The Regular Trader Service provides the security of dealing with one of the UK’s major banking groups along with the cheapest charges of any high street broker."
