Since Halifax Online launched in April 2000, over 300,000 Web saver accounts have been opened. The site has attracted new users at the rate of over 1,200 per day with over 600,000 statement pages viewed and 190,000 external transfers performed per month.

The bank says around 70 per cent of online customers use the service to manage their current accounts.

Halifax says it also provides free access in 650 of its branches through 'click & call points', allowing customers who do not have access to a PC to check online accounts.

Paul Waggott, head of e-commerce, Halifax, says: "These figures show customers are increasingly inclined to use our online services and take advantage of the convenience and time-saving the service offers."
