Mobipay signs with SchlumbergerSema ahead of m-payments launch

Mobipay, a Spanish m-payments company formed by the country's mobile operators and 80% of its financial institutions, has signed a five-year deal with SchlumbergerSema for data processing, systems integration and consulting services.

The Mobipay service will enable customers to perform secure financial transactions via a digital mobile phone using a pre-paid or post-paid account. Handset users will be able to perform direct payments, Internet payments and money transfers, as well as micropayments for purchasing theatre tickets, taxi fares or snacks from vending machines.

SchlumbergerSema will implement Telcofinance, its payment solution that performs real-time transaction routing between mobile network operators and participating banks, payment processors and merchants. The company will also deliver consulting and systems integration services, and for the next five years, will manage the complete financial transactions routing process through its secure data centre.

Following a pilot project in Valladolid, Spain, Mobipay will launch m-commerce services throughout the country in the last quarter of 2002.
