ING Direct has clocked up four million customers for its worldwide direct banking operation, opening one million new accounts in the last four months alone.

ING Direct was launched in Canada in May 1997 and is now also active in Spain, Australia, France, the United States, Italy and Germany (through DiBa). The bank's offering is based on providing low-cost financial services to consumers via call centres and the Internet.

As at 30 June, 2002, the total funds entrusted at ING Direct was EUR42 billion.

The four millionth customer opened an Orange account at ING Direct in Spain.
