Suitable sites for the new centre are currently being considered in both Cyberjaya and Technology Park Malaysia. Operations are expected to commence in the first half of 2003 with 500-700 staff initially handling routine back office data processing for HSBC Group companies overseas.

Dyfrig John, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad's deputy chairman and chief executive officer, says: "Malaysia has an excellent high-tech telecommunications infrastructure, a strong labour market with good language skills, and cost advantages, making it an excellent choice for one of HSBC's Group service centres."
