Nationwide launches WAP banking

Nationwide Building Society has launched its comprehensive banking service for WAP-enabled mobile phones, following the success of a 250-user pilot scheme earlier this summer.

The service enables members with a current account and supported phone to view account balances and their last 12 transactions, transfer money between Nationwide accounts, view and make bill payments and order a new or replacement PIN number.

The WAP service can also be used by members with a Nationwide credit card or savings accounts registered for Internet banking. The service is accessible through all UK mobile phone networks. Supported phones are the Nokia 7110, 6250, 6210 and 3330.

The UK building society carried out a 250-member pilot of the WAP service in July. Users all found it easy to use (68% very easy, 32% fairly easy), with 22% stating they were delighted with the service and 77% saying they were satisfied. (Only 1% said they were dissatisfied).

Ninety-six per cent of pilot users said they would definitely or are likely to recommend Nationwide WAP banking to a friend.

Jim Willens, Nationwide's e-commerce director, says: "I was delighted to see the service receive such positive feedback from members who volunteered to take part in the trial. Our members can now carry out key banking transactions while on the move, complementing our existing comprehensive range of access channels."
