CommBank ports cardless cash capability to smartwatch

Commonwealth Bank of Australia is looking to profit from the momentum created by the forthcoming launch of the Apple Watch with the release of new apps for both Android and Apple wearables.

The CommBank app for Android and iOS smart watches will enable users to check their balance on the go, locate the nearest ATM and make an ATM cash withdrawal without a card, using Cardless Cash.

CommBank follows in the footsteps of compatriots Westpace and St George, which have developed apps to work on Sony and Samsung smartwatches respectively.

By offering cardless cash transactions at the ATM, Commbank takes its iteration one step closer to full-scale transactional capability, which would see users swipe their watch at the checkout to pay for items on the high street.

Last month, Australian telco Optus announced plans to launch smartwatches and wristbands that would let customers make contactless payments with the flick of a wrist.
