Bank-backed QR code-based mobile payments app launches in Belgium

A QR code-based mobile wallet that can be used for in-store, in-app, online and P2P payments has launched in Belgium with the backing of the country's major banks.

The iOS and Android Sixdots app is a joint venture between banks - including BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC and ING - telco Proximus and payments outfit Bancontact/Mister Cash.

Customers who download the app, pick their bank and add a Bancontact card before creating a six-digit code. To make instore, P2P and online payments, users then enter this code and scan a QR squiggle.

The partners say that, thanks to the six-digit code, and because no data is stored on the phone, security is guaranteed. Card details are no longer stored in the seller’s database when making online or in-app payments.

The service can be used at merchants that have activated the Bancontact/Mister Cash mobile service but plans to integrate with MasterCard's MasterPass have been postponed to "guarantee that the next steps are successful".

Meanwhile, over the next year new features will be added, letting users add multiple cards, including credit and loyalty cards, as well as coupons. People will also be able to use Sixdots as a secure proof of identity and even link their accounts to their banking apps.

Sounds secure but does nothing to enhance the POS customer experience.

Making a payment should be seamless, swift and easy every time. Scanning a QR code is fiddly and often frustrated users. Hence Apple Pay being quick from NFC is good as it's more secure and just as easy as swiping a card.

Check out BPay from Barclaycard too - they've put that in place at Southampton Football Club. It's a good niche example.
