Brixton Pound gets mobile app and iBeacon push

20 June 2014  |  8487 views  |  0 Teenagers using Smartphone

The Brixton Pound is getting its own app, tapping iBeacon technology to let shoppers make purchases in the local currency through their iPhones.

Launched as a paper currency in 2009 to encourage locals to spend money in independent businesses, the Brixton Pound has since added a pay-by-text option and is accepted at more than 250 firms.

The new service, developed with tech firm Dingo, will see hundreds of participating merchants install iBeacon devices, which use Bluetooth Low Energy to ping the mobile phones of customers who have downloaded the app.

The app automatically prepares a shortcut right on the lock screen of the phone, enabling the user to pay for everything in a few seconds, with no searching or typing.

The free app will be available at Apple's App Store next month, with an Android version expected to follow later this summer.
