BBVA Compass launches NBA-branded online account

BBVA Compass has set its sights on basketball fans with an NBA-branded online account built on its new core technology platform.

The NBA Banking account uses BBVA Compass's new core system to provide the integration need for a "wholly digital" product, says the firm.

The account can only be opened online and maintained via the Web or with a smartphone using the bank's mobile app, with customers able to conduct almost any transaction without visiting a branch.

Fans can add their favourite NBA team logo to their debit card, view game scores and headlines via the online account interface, and check schedules and scores via mobile devices. There is also a foray into gamification, giving customers the chance to earn NBA merchandise by processing transactions online.

To promote the offering, all-star players Kevin Durant and James Harden have been signed up as "brand ambassadors" and will feature in themed advertising through the season.

BBVA Compass will simultaneously launch a hashtag - #Realfan - encouraging people to post photos to Instagram and Twitter to display their "fandom" and promote the bank's first national product.

Manolo Sanchez, president and CEO, BBVA Compass, says: "Sports is about passion, and this is a way to tap into that. NBA Banking is more than just a way to bank. It's a way for fans to show their team pride and love for the game."

Very creative.  I wonder who will be the first to mimic with the NFL...
