The closure is part of a money saving plan involving the loss of 3500 jobs and closure of 12 offices initially outlined by RBS - more than 80% owned by the taxpayer - last September.

Union Unite - which claims that 440 jobs are being axed - reacted furiously to the news that its members have been told they are losing their jobs.

David Fleming, national officer, Unite, says: "RBS must reconsider the closure of the Bristol site and find alternative employment to prevent the devastation that this will cause the local community."
