Citi has become the latest high profile victim of computer hackers, suffering a data breach that puts the personal information of around 200,000 North American card customers at risk.
The bank confirmed to the Financial Times that hackers breached Citi Account Online, compromising around one per cent of its 21 million credit card customers, in May.
Names, account numbers and e-mail addresses have been compromised but not birth dates, social security numbers and card security codes, which are held elsewhere.
Affected customers are being informed of the breach, law enforcement has been called in and fraud detection rules tightened up, Citi told the FT.
