Tesco and Game to sell Facebook Credits

Tesco and Game to sell Facebook Credits

In a UK first, Facebook has struck deals with high street retailers Tesco and Game to start selling its virtual currency gift cards in their shops.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Facebook Credits will go on sale at the shops from this week, enabling customers to buy virtual cash on pre-paid cards that can then be used to purchase digital goods and services.

Currently, the Credits can be used with around 200 games and apps within Facebook. However, the firm's Deborah Liu told the Telegraph that the currency's reach could soon expand through Facebook Connect, which allows users to login to other sites with their Facebook ID.

Euan Ballantyne, head, cards, Tesco Bank, told the paper that with social gaming becoming increasingly popular, the Facebook cards could prove a popular Christmas present.

With the virtual goods market already a multi-billion dollar industry, Facebook is seeking to make its currency as widely available as possible. In September it struck a deal with the US supermarket chain Target, making Credits available in 1750 stores and has since signed up giants Best Buy and Walmart before adding Safeway, GameStop, and RadioShack to its roster earlier this week.
