The Netherlands could be cash free within five years as the Dutch migrate to cards and mobile payments, says consumer association Consumentenbond.
According to local press reports, the pronouncement comes in the wake of a move by telco Telfort to stop accepting cash payments from April for security reasons.
Supermarkets have already outlined ambitious plans to phase out the use of cash by 2014 in a bid to reduce the risk of robbery.
In addition to security issues, cash is also expensive, according to a report published last week by Retail Banking Research which claims using notes and coins costs every person in Europe EUR130 a year.
